Doing great now, and the swelling has leveled out. Maybe my body is finally sealing up the lymphatic fluid tube by building up scar tissue around it. No more jeans – I’m wearing Dockers today and tomorrow.

Back to work

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

Went back to work today, bandage-free! There is still a lot of fluid in my thigh, causing it to swell up a bit, so I wore jeans just in case. Sandi called the Radiation Oncologist for me, and found out she is off this week. They said to call back on Monday to make an appointment with her.

Had some leakage yesterday afternoon, but not enough to make us leave work. Stayed home today to keep an eye on it, with only a waterproof bandage on it. It soaked through, but a second one remained dry. Sandi wasn’t feeling well, so she stayed home and I was able to help her out. I decided to go to bed tonight without any bandage, and see if the opening will dry up a little.

Drain out

Monday, April 21st, 2014

Saw the surgeon this morning to take a look at the hose and drain. He thought the drain may be acting as a wick, preventing the area from closing up and healing. Before I knew it, he had pulled the drain tube out – I didn’t feel a thing. He said it had been nearly all the way out anyway. He wants me to call him by Thursday to let him know how it’s doing.

So now it’s a small hole (no stitches) with a huge pad of gauze over it in case it leaks. I have a feeling we may be leaving work early…but maybe it’s just deja vú…

Now that it’s gone, it seems strange how the drain had seemed to be a part of me. It’s great to finally have it out, though.

More hose

Friday, April 18th, 2014

Still getting 100 cc’s or more of fluid daily. I’m a little concerned about the hose, which has worked its way out by at least an inch. I’ve been able to see the sheath, which is also protruding a little. I called the doctor’s office, and they said to come on in Monday morning.

Hose fix

Sunday, April 13th, 2014

Woke up to find a small break in the drain hose. I tried a couple types of tape (not duct tape, though), none of which stuck. Fortunately, I had some heat-shrink tubing left over from a wiring project, and it fit over the tube perfectly. I aimed a blow-dryer at it for a few minutes, and was good to go again.

Back to work

Felt much better today. I went back to work, and the drain is producing a lot of fluid again.

Home again

Thursday, April 10th, 2014

Still under the weather, so I stayed home to rest again. The area where the drain hose comes out is red and swollen, and produced very little fluid. I think it’s probably clogged with protein again.

Dr. call

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014

Had a slight fever this morning, with chills and aching in joints and muscles. I called in sick and spent most of the day in bed or the recliner. Sandi went back to work and when she called to check on me, my temperature was over 100°F. My body is definitely fighting something. I didn’t take any aspirin because I want the fever to do its job and kill the virus.

The surgeon called and wanted me to try not pushing the air out of the drain bulb, so there wouldn’t be any suction – just drainage. He wants me to keep an eye on it for a couple of hours, and see if my thigh starts leaking. If it did, I was to press the air out of the bulb as normal. He said he’ll call back tomorrow to ask me if it made any difference.

Fortunately, I had the good sense to write that down and record the time. After two hours, my left thigh had swollen up and the opening was starting a slow leak. I returned the bulb to its normal suction mode so it would start draining again. It’s draining very slowly, so it may be a while until it returns to “normal.”

Drain report

Today was the first day that the drain area didn’t hurt since it was put in, so I was able to walk at a normal pace.
